The Better Moves Project

The Better Moves Project is United Safe Van Lines’ ongoing initiative to improve the standards, transparency, and consumer protection in the American moving industry. Moving scams, inflated quotes, and poor service have been persistent problems in this industry for decades. The Better Moves Project addresses those problems through data collection, industry advocacy, and direct consumer education.

What the Better Moves Project does

  • Tracks complaint data — we monitor FMCSA complaint records, BBB filings, and customer reviews to identify patterns of bad practice and remove non-compliant carriers from our network.
  • Publishes consumer guides — our research team produces practical guides on identifying scam movers, understanding your rights under federal law, and knowing the right questions to ask before signing any moving contract.
  • Advocates for stronger standards — we work with industry stakeholders to support better licensing enforcement, clearer binding estimate requirements, and stronger consumer recourse for damaged or missing shipments.
  • Educates consumers before they move — our pre-move checklist, red flag guide, and consumer rights summary are available free to every moving customer on this site.

Why this matters

The FMCSA receives tens of thousands of moving fraud complaints every year. Most involve companies that provided a low estimate and then demanded two to three times that amount on delivery, holding the shipment until payment was made. These practices are illegal — but enforcement resources are limited and victims often have limited practical recourse. The Better Moves Project exists because we believe the industry can do better, and because protecting customers from these situations is central to what USVL does.

What is the Better Moves Project?

Moving costs are confusing and quotes rarely match reality. The Better Moves Project fixes that with real data from real movers. We select people planning a long-distance move, follow their journey from quote to delivery, and publish honest, anonymized case studies that help the next person move smarter.

In exchange for documenting your move, you receive a $500 grant toward your moving costs.

How it works

How the project works

Five simple steps from application to your $500 grant.

Step 1

Apply

Fill out the short application with your move details — where you’re going, when, and your home size.

Step 2

Get selected

We choose a mix of moves each month. If you’re picked, we’ll email you and confirm the details.

Step 3

Sign the agreement

Review and sign a simple participation agreement so we can publish your (anonymized) experience.

Step 4

Document your move

Share three quick check-ins — before, during and after — with costs, photos and how it went.

Step 5

Receive $500

Once your final check-in is complete, we send your $500 grant. That’s it.

Eligibility

Who can apply

A few simple requirements to take part.

A 500+ mile move

Your move must cover at least 500 miles (a long-distance or interstate move).

Moving soon

You should be moving within the next few months so we can follow it in real time.

18 or older

Participants must be 18+ and a US resident planning a US move.

Willing to share

You’re happy to share costs, a few photos and honest feedback about your move.

Real quotes & receipts

You can share your actual moving quotes and final costs (we anonymize everything).

One move per person

Each participant can take part once per move.

What we’ll ask you to document

Everything is done through short online surveys — about an hour total across the whole move. Here’s what each stage covers:

  • About you & your move: origin, destination, home size, dates and who’s moving.
  • Pre-move: the quotes you received, which mover you chose and why, and how you prepared.
  • Moving day: how loading went, timing, crew, any surprises — plus a few photos.
  • Post-move: final cost vs. estimate, delivery timing, damages/claims and how it was resolved.
  • Your experience: what went well, what you’d do differently, and advice for the next person.
